When Tia found herself actually seated across from the counselor, she was at a loss for words. There were some unresolved issues in her life that were affecting her internal peace and her normal functioning but she could not put a finger on what was bothering her. The idea of opening up to a stranger felt alien to her, leaving her unsure of where to begin. The Counsellor patiently waited for her internal agitation to quiet down. Tia felt an awkward silence lingered between them. She said assertively, “I don’t know what to talk about. I don’t think I have a problem.”
The counselor smiled gently and asked, “Do you think you should talk to someone only if you have a problem?’
Something about the question struck a chord with Tia. It was as if the weight of unspoken expectations and judgement had lifted, and the invisible barrier—the taboo of seeking help for matters of the mind – dissolved. For the first time, she felt at ease.
